Thing # 23 - reflection
This has been a sharp, but fun, learning curve for me. By doing the Learning 2.0 program I have benefited by learning about web applications that are available on the Internet. Some I had never heard of before, others heard of but not interested in finding out further information about them as I thought they would be too difficult to learn.
RSS feeds and newsreaders was something that I thought would be difficult. I'm certainly glad that I learnt how easy it actually is to subscribe to a feed and I now have a whole list of useful feeds that I browze through on a regular basis.
I also really liked Flickr since I like photography. I think this is a great site with so much to offer.
This program has assisted my lifelong learning as it has shown me different tools and applications that I can use in my studies. I also use these things in my personal life now. I have benefited from doing this program by having my knowledge base expanded considerably.
Unexpected outcomes from doing this program, I would have to say I was quite surprised to find out how easy all the tasks were to do and just how useful these web 2.0 tools have proven to be. I am far away from being an expert on these applications but I am surprised with just how much I learnt during this journey.
I like the Learning 2.0 format and concept (combining podcasts with text was great) and I don't think it needs to be changed. It worked well for me, especially getting participants to blog about their experiences while doing the program. A great example of incidental learning.
If another discovery program like this was run again I would consider joining in. My learning journey has after all, just begun.

Audiobooks
I was not able to create an account for NetLibrary since I am not a staff member nor do I have a library card for PLCMC. I did have a look at the list of audiobooks supplied by the link "downloadable eAudiobooks" and found a James Patterson book first up (one of my favourite authors).
NetLibrary provides a wonderful service for those requiring audiobooks. However, I must say they are not something I would require for personal use. I would much rather read a book than listen to one. That being said, I know there are a lot of people, including people with vision impairments, who really like audiobooks. So NetLibrary offers a service that would be quite popular.

Podcasts
I had a look at a few podcast directories that were listed for this site. Found an interesting podcast put out by justonemorebook.com. This was an interesting site that does podcasts about a children's books, interviews with authors, play reviews and promotes books that users may not have heard of previously. These book review podcasts are done by Nancy Pearl. I thought the one she did on "Throw like a girl" short stories by Jean Thompson was excellent and I am going to see if this book is available in my local library. I added an RSS feed for Nancy Pearl's podcasts to my bloglines account.
By using Podscope, I found a podcast by Bill Thompson on The Bookcast, in which he was talking about the ALA Conference. He interviewed people promoting their products at the conference and discussed how digital America's libraries are becoming and how technology has added new services that libraries can offer. Google was also represented at this conference and he talked about how Google makes a good partner for libraries. Interesting stuff.
My computer is not the best at the moment so I am not even going to attemp to make my own podcast.

Youtube
I have been aware of Youtube for some time but never spent a great deal of time on it. Just when my children have said, "Watch this." Therefore I was surprised by the number of things that can be found on this site.
I did a search for a number of things, including galahs and was surprised at the amount of clips I found for each search.
Can see that video clips would be useful for libraries for many things, including employee orientations, letting users know what services the library offers, promoting Library and Information Week, which led me to this little gem.

Discovering Web 2.0 tools
I like these online web tools. Can see they will be around forever. I had a play around with Widgets on http://www.yourminis.com/ I love this site as there a lot of cool widgets to look at and play with. Being a fan of riddles I chose a riddle widget and found it quite easy to send to my blog, even without signing up. How neat is that.
Widgets would be useful for library sites to add calendars, etc. Would save having to reinvent the wheel and create one yourself - especially for time pressed library staff. Could also link directly to music and video sites from the users web page by using these widgets.
There are just so many to choose from. What a great application.

Thing 18
I really like these web based applications. I can see a lot of uses for them. Particularly for me in my role as secretary for a community group. Instead of emailing minutes to the chairperson for editing, they could be accessed on Zoho and done on here. Would save a lot of toing and froing. Would also save having to save documents to flash drives.
Zoho Writer is an easy word processing application to use and has all the features of Microsoft Word. I like the tags options so users can file as they wish. I also like how you can publish to your blog and I am up for the challenge so am going to try that.
The only downside for me with Google docs and Zoho Writer is that I can't access them at work so would not be able to use it there for any word processing I do there. Bit of a shame.
Might be worth talking to our IT people and finding out why they are blocked.

PBWiki
Thing #17 - playing around with PBWiki was interesting. I had a look at PLCMC's Learning 2.0 wiki and their favourites page. Added a post in favourite birds then put my blog into the favourties blog page. Lots of favourites to look at here.

I have had an interesting time looking at Wikis for thing #16.
Libraries are certainly using them in lots of useful ways. Uses for them are “only limited by your imagination”, to quote one site. The possibilities are endless for what libraries can use wikis for. The only drawback would be that because anyone can edit them then wikis can be open to vandalism.
Some of the ideas that I found for wikis that appeal to me are:
posting agendas prior to meetings so some discussion can occur beforehand,
using wikis on staff intranets, and posting book reviews.
The Library Success: A best practices wiki is a great site. Getting libraries to share ideas or anything that could be useful to other libraries is a great initiative. A lot of useful categories to look at here. I explored a lot of interesting links from this site.
Overall, I like the ideas of wikis and I think they can be very useful to libraries.

Library 2.0 & Web 2.0
Rick Anderson's article, Away from the "icebergs", was very insightful.
I would have to agree that the emerging technology and information that is freely available via the internet will change libraries as we know them.
In the future, possibly even now, there would be no need to purchase reference books (although I often find I will get what I want from a book quicker than the internet). Library staff will need to be educated in the new online applications so they can assist their patrons.
Libraries no longer have the monopoly power for information, which is good news for some patrons, but for libraries it's now a matter of adjusting how they offer their services to people seeking information. They will need to update and reevaluate how best to serve library users.
Generation Z (or the igeneration) take their mobile phones, ipods, laptops everywhere. They already take the Web 2.0 applications for granted so it will be their generation that will mostly demand the change from libraries.
One thing for certain is libraries as we know them will need to change or be left behind.

Technorati
I found Technorati very easy to navigate through and find other bloggers with similiar interests. Found quite a few blogs relating to the Learning 2.0 program and read a lot of positive comments from people who have done the program.
I liked how there were different search options but I probably would not use this application regularly. Will check it out now and then though, when I get time :-)

I enjoyed this exercise and learning all about this application. I like how del.icio.us uses free form tagging and has no specific rules or guidelines. I now know what folksomonies are.
I had some fun following other users “tag trails” to discover other websites of interest to me, enabling me to further build my knowledge network. Have started to create quite a good information directory on del.icio.us.
I can see many benefits for using this application, including creating reading lists and for researching material.
I like how you can see how many people have a site bookmarked, which is a good indication that the site is worthwhile.

Rollyo
The jury is still out on this "thing". At first I didn't like it at all as I could not see it as something that I would use. Also found it difficult to locate information on how to use Rollyo effectivley.
After locating a number of sites relating to special education I created search links relating to this topic. I then did a search for a number of topics, using my rollyo search. It was after I had done this that it clicked how this feature could be quite useful, especially for libraries, as they could list all the sites they use regularly for certain topics, under their own search engine. This would then save them having to search each site individually or getting heaps of results from a main search engine, such as Google.

Librarything
This is a great service. I like how librarything 'catalogues' books users enter on their shelf and how the site connects people with the same books. A great way for finding out what others with similiar reading tastes are reading.
